At Signpost we have three dedicated counsellors who are available to support carers and former carers.

The Signpost Counselling Service offers carers 50 minute counselling sessions, held once a week for six weeks, with an opportunity to increase the number of sessions if there's a need. The sessions are offered for free, although we do ask if you can make a contribution by donating to Signpost.

All our counsellors are members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and have an excellent understanding of what it's like to be a carer and the challenges this caring role brings. The sessions offer a safe, confidential and non-judgmental way for our carers to talk through issues they're experiencing with a trained therapist.

Counselling can help you cope with:

  • a mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety
  • an upsetting physical health condition or illness
  • a difficult life event, such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, work-related stress or a major change in life
  • difficult emotions and feelings – for example, low self-esteem or anger
  • and many other issues

Sessions are usually held face to face at The Heatons Centre, but due to Covid-19, are currently taking place over the phone, on Zoom or by WhatsApp - whichever means carers feel most comfortable.

Carers who have accessed the service have described it as a safe way to open up and explore some of the emotional issues they're experiencing. Carers have told us that afterwards they've felt better both physically and mentally, have a better understanding of themselves and their situation and have gone away with new coping strategies.

The counsellor has helped me to express my emotions – anger and hurt and despair. She has restored my self-belief and has accepted me without judgement. I’m beginning to feel less helpless and emotionally stronger and more in control. I can only say that my decision to seek counselling has been the right one for me. I feel supported and accepted and I feel secure in the knowledge that the counsellor is definitely on my side.
