Contingency Planning

Contingency Planning

It is always a worry if you are a carer for a loved one or neighbour and you fear you may suddenly be unable to care for them.

To help you plan for this several local organisations are there to support you, including registering for the Carers Emergency Alert Card.

Emergency Numbers for Carers Card

This is a postcard with all the local emergency numbers, which you can carry around you or leave by the phone. It also has space left for you to write personal contacts.

Carers Emergency Alert Card

The Emergency Alert Card scheme gives carers peace of mind because enables you to plan for what happens if you experience an emergency yourself and cannot undertake your normal caring responsibilities. Upon registering the plan will be agreed, which will contain information on family, friends or local organisations that pick up your caring duties from you in an emergency.

As part of the scheme, you will be given a Carecall telephone number along with your own ID number to identify your personal emergency action plan.

If for some reason you are not able to call to put your plan into action, someone will be on hand to make the call for you. The person you care for will also be given a second card, giving you extra peace of mind that if anything out of the ordinary happens your emergency plan will start.

You could save this number in your mobile phone under ICE (In Case of Emergency).

Message in a Bottle

This is a simple, but effective emergency information scheme. You keep your essential personal and medical details where they can easily be found in an emergency – the fridge. Paramedics, police, fire-fighters and social services support the initiative and know to look in the fridge when they see the ‘Message in a Bottle’ stickers.
