Signpost Stockport for Carers works to improve the quality of life of Stockport's carers through all of the services we offer. This range of free information sessions, interest courses, and social events is designed to help you learn new things, connect with others, and take a break from your caring roles.

We hope there is an activity, time, and place that suits YOU.

Most sessions are free but where there is a small cost involved it will be indicated (£).

Delivered by Life Leisure, SMILE is a fun and gentle exercise session open to all; take part seated or standing at a pace that is right for you. This is a very friendly low-key group with a cup of tea to finish! Drop-in: FREE for carers, £3 for non-carers.

 

September 2018

Enjoy a brew inside followed by a guided gardening session led by Corinna from The Kindling Trust. The gardening will be outdoors or inside polytunnels.

Volunteer Training for new Changing Times project, 10am-1pm with lunch included, The Heatons Centre Training for experienced carers/ex-carers to support current carers as they navigate difficult transitions along their caring journey. Thursday 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th September - Creative Writing Course, 2-4pm, The Heatons Centre

Led by writing teacher Jayne Fallows, this four-week course will inspire you to try your hand at creative writing in a supportive and non-judgemental environment. Open to all so please spread the word amongst friends and family. Booking essential.

Monday 10th September – Taste of the Monastery Tour, 12-2pm, The Monastery Manchester, Gorton Lane, Manchester, M2 5WF – transport also available from The Heatons Centre (£)

A 20 minute walking tour of the beautiful former Church, Friary and Garden followed by a tasty lunch in the Victorian Pantry with soup, sandwich and cake, and tea or coffee. Wheelchair accessible. Carers and cared for all welcome. Cost £6 for carers, £9.50 for non-carers. Advanced booking essential – no later than Friday 31st August please.

Friday 28th September – ‘Stop Stigma with Science’ Mental Health Conference, 10am-4pm, Stockport County Conference Centre (£)

With three brilliant mental health researchers and clinicians from Oxford/Manchester Universities talking about their work and answering questions. There will also be information stalls for local organisations working to combat the stigma and challenges of mental health conditions. Cost - £8. October 2018

Monday 1st October 2018 - Canal Boat Trip, 10am-12.30pm, New Horizons, Marple Wharf, Church Street, Marple, SK6 6BW (£)

A relaxing sail from Marple to High Lane on the Macclesfield Canal. Passengers need to arrive by 10am for a 10.30am sailing, returning at 12.30pm. Light refreshments will be provided. Please note due to demand this trip is just for current carers, spaces are limited, and booking is essential. Cost: £3

Four-week course supporting current carers who are navigating difficult transitions along their caring journey including loved ones needing residential care or approaching the end of life. Tuesday 9th October - Fabulous Fungi Wander - 10.00am-2.00pm, Etherow Country Park, George Street, Stockport, SK6 5JD

Nature enthusiast Dave takes us on a free walking exploration of Etherow, seeking out the seasonal fungi that are all around us without us even realising. End the day with complimentary coffee and cake in the café. Carers and cared for all welcome. While the pace will be gentle, carers will be on their feet for much of the day so good mobility is essential. Booking required.

Tuesday 6th, 13th, 20th November - Facebook First Timers – 10.30am-12pm, The Heatons Centre

A very basic three-week course taking you through: the very first steps of how to set up a Facebook account on your computer, tablet or phone; how to ensure you have the privacy settings you need; and how to use Facebook for a) keeping in touch with friends, family and other carers; b) finding out useful information; c) pursuing your hobbies and interests.

 

Thursday 8th November – Recycling for Greater Manchester, 1.30-3.30pm, Longley Lane Recycling Centre, Longley Lane, Sharston, M22 4RQ – transport also available from The Heatons Centre.

Go behind the scenes on this free tour of a modern recycling plant. Find out how your waste from home is recycled, made into compost or even turned into electricity. Carers and cared for all welcome.

Christmas Crafts Special! Help us make decorations for Signpost’s trees at the St. George’s Christmas Tree Festival. Plus all the usual tea, cake, and chat for carers.

Monday 19th November – Manchester’s Christmas Markets! (£ for your own train ticket) Meet up with Signpost Staff and other carers at Stockport Railway Station (11.14am train) or at Manchester Picadilly (arrival time 11.24am). Wander down to Albert Square for a stroll around the delightful Christmas Markets and a complimentary gluhwein or brew on us. Make your own way home or take the 2.01pm train with us back to Stockport. Please note train times may be subject to change!

Monday 3rd December Carers Christmas Lunch: 12pm-2pm, venue and cost of set lunch to be confirmed but save the date! (£)

Enjoy a Christmas party lunch in the company of other carers and Signpost staff. Whilst we can’t pay the bill (sorry!), Signpost will organise the booking and liaise with the restaurant, making it as trouble free for carers as possible. Booking essential.
