Signpost Stockport for Carers work to improve the quality of life of Stockport's carers through all of the services we offer. The following activities are offered to help you learn new things, connect with others, and take a well-deserved break from your caring roles.

We hope there is an activity, time and place that suits YOU.

Many sessions are FREE for carers; where there is a cost, it will be indicated (£).

Monday 7th January – Gardening Group for Carers, 10.30am-12pm, The Kindling Trust, Woodbank Old Nursery, 78 Park Lane, Stockport, SK1 4JS (inside Woodbank Memorial Park) Enjoy a brew inside followed by a guided gardening session led by Corinna from The Kindling Trust. The gardening will be outdoors or inside polytunnels. Ex-carers also welcome.

Wednesday 9th January - Heart to Heart, 2-4pm, Salvation Army, Stockport Road, Cheadle Heath, use postcode SK3 0JE Drop in for afternoon tea, chat, crafts and whatever else you fancy! Supported by Salvation Army volunteers. You are welcome to come along with the person that you care for. FREE to attend (donations welcomed).

Thursday 10th January - Heald Green Carers Drop In, 10am-1pm, Heald Green Village Hall, Outwood Road, SK8 3JL Join Jennie from Signpost for a warm welcome, a lovely cup of tea or coffee, and the chance to chat to other carers.

Saturday 12th, 19th, 26th January, and 2nd February – Mindfulness: The Breathing Club, 10.30am-12.30pm, The Heatons Centre This four week course for carers will be prepared and delivered by Paul who has a real understanding about the role of an unpaid carer. It will explore the use of mindfulness and breathing to manage stress and maintain your sense of self. Booking essential, free to attend.

Tuesday 15th January - Everyday First Aid for carers (FREE to attend), 10.30am-12.30pm, Friends Meeting House, SK1 3DW (free parking) Delivered by the British Red Cross, this excellent basic first aid course will teach you how to best respond to common place emergencies such as choking and cardiac arrests. One carer told us ‘I didn’t think it was possible to learn so much in such an enjoyable and relaxed environment’. Booking essential. Ex-carers also welcome.

Thursday 17th and 31st January - Creative Writing for Carers, 2-4pm, The Heatons Centre Try your hand at creative writing in this light-hearted, non-judgemental group led by writing teacher Jayne. Numbers are limited so booking is essential. FREE for carers. Anyone interested in a writing group can also contact Jayne directly at [email protected]

Friday 18th January - Carers Coffee Morning, 10.30am-12pm, The Heatons Centre

All the usual tea, cake, and chat: activities optional! Ex-carers also welcome.

Monday 21st January - Carers Network Meeting, 1-3pm, The Heatons Centre

More formal than our coffee mornings, this is a chance to hear from, and ask questions of, services and professionals who will speak on a subject relevant to all carers. Arrival from 1pm for a light buffet, with business to start at 1.30pm. Booking essential – ex-carers also welcome. Speakers are still being finalised – keep an eye on our website and social media for final arrangements.

Tuesday 29th January – Avro Heritage Tour, 10.30am-12.30pm, Avro Heritage Museum, Woodford Aerodrome, Chester Road, Woodford, Stockport, SK7 1AG On the site of the old Woodford Airfield, take a guided tour of the aviation museum and enjoy Vulcan and Lancaster cockpit experiences. Complimentary refreshments in the café to finish. All welcome. Cost: FREE for registered carers, £12 for non-carers (£).

Tuesday 29th January – Carers Supper Club, arrival from 6.30pm with a supper 7-9pm, The Heatons Centre Join other carers and some of the Signpost team for supper. A simple two course meal with soft drinks and coffee (if you’d like something stronger, please bring your own!) £5 suggested contribution. Carers only, booking essential.

Wednesday 30th January – Time for a Pint? 1-3pm, Ashlea, 14 Manchester Rd, Cheadle SK8 2NP New(ish) social group for men who are carers and ex-carers. Sup, eat, and chat as you wish at this relaxed monthly get-together on the last Wednesday of each month. Cost: attendees to pay for their own refreshments (£).

Monday 21st January – Life After Loss, 10am-12.30pm, The Heatons Centre This informal get-together aims to help people understand the grief process and their own response to their loss. It is a supportive way to explore emotions and think about what coping strategies might be helpful in the weeks and months ahead.

A huge thank you to Elsie who provides discounted treatments for carers. If you would like to treat yourself, Elsie is at The Heatons Centre every Tuesday, £8.00 per half an hour. Treatments include: Head, hand and back massage, facial, basic reflexology. Booking is essential.

Led by a professional artist, this is a relaxed and friendly drop-in group open to any carer, arty or not! Something different every week. £5 voluntary contribution for materials.

SMILE gentle exercise - 1.30-2.30pm, The Heatons Centre

New year, new start, new you! Delivered by Life Leisure, SMILE is a fun and gentle exercise session open to all; take part seated or standing at a pace that is right for you. This is a very friendly low-key group with a cup of tea to finish! Drop-in: free for carers, £3 for non-carers (£).

Men only at this course – sorry, ladies! Learn new skills and recipes with a free take home veg bag. Future courses will be open to all so please register interest with us for future dates.

Meet up with Signpost staff and other carers at Stockport Railway Station or at Manchester Piccadilly – from there it’s a ten minute walk to the museum. Booking essential.
