Going back to work?
Returning to work after a period of caring can be very daunting. Your caring role may have come to an end, you may have enlisted some support from other family members or paid carers or perhaps your circumstances have changed. Whatever the reason, returning to work can be difficult and it’s important to remember the skills and attributes you developed whilst you were out of work.
Caring is still work. It’s hard work. It should absolutely be acknowledged more when you’re trying to return to work. (Working carer)
Every month we hold a Zoom meet-up for carers and former carers who are considering returning to work or changing jobs. This peer support group was suggested by carers who wanted somewhere to meet and share experiences about job hunting, application forms, interviews and challenges around finding work as a carer. Meet-ups take place on Zoom on the last Thursday of every month from 11am-12pm. Find out more and register here.
On our website you will find a number of e-Learning modules that might help in your transition back into work. These include Carers UK’s ‘Learning for Living’ e-Learning course which will help you think about those important skills you developed whilst caring for someone.
The mental health charity, Blurt It Out have a number of resources to support people returning to work who have mental health issues. You can read their tips or job hunting, coping with rejection, volunteering and other topics here.

Looking for work
There are a number of recruitment sites and organisations who specialise in flexible working. These may be worth looking at during your job search:
More and more organisations are now promoting their flexible working cultures and carer-friendly policies on their websites and in recruitment materials. You can also see a list of organisations that have been accredited by Carers UK as being carer-friendly, here.
We’re delighted that as of November 2020 we’re now a referral partner for Smart Works. Through this new partnership we will be able to refer female carers to Smart Works for:
- Careers coaching, guidance and CV support
- Interview coaching – the career coaching service will help carers prepare for their upcoming interview
- Interview clothing – women with upcoming interviews will be offered a bespoke parcel of wardrobe essentials, delivered to their door, so that they can look and feel great at their interview
- Dressing for the job – women with a confirmed job offer can be offered a second dressing, which can be delivered or in person following the end of lockdown.
It’s important to us at Signpost that employers appreciate the skills, loyalty and attributes that carers have and may have enhanced during their time caring. Caring is not easy and can seem like a full-time job. We aim to encourage employers in Stockport to consider their recruitment practices and ensure that applicants with gaps in career-history are not penalised. We want carers to 1) be able to stay in work if they want to and 2) return to work if they want to.
